Basketball: Hawaii vs. Pacific

A belated WOOT to the University of Hawaii women's basketball team for defeating University of the Pacific on Saturday. The Wahine are now tied with Pacific for first in the Big West.

The game was awesome. Yes, the win was in overtime. Yes, the Wahine could have made it easier on themselves if they had just made their free-throws. But, bottom-line, they won in front of what seemed liked the largest crowd so far this season. And, get this, not only did people show up but people made noise. People cheered, people booed, people even chanted "DE-FENSE." There was a line to buy tickets. There was a line at the concessions. There was a line for ketchup. It was awesome. This team is awesome. It was also very pink.

Saturday was "Play4Kay" night, so the team wore pink warm-up shirts. Pacific did the same and also wore pink shoelaces. Mary Wooley wore hot pink skinny jeans. After the game, kids were allowed to go on the court to shoot layups and unlike Thursday, there were actually kids on the court! (Who was the genius who decided to start this promo on a school night?) There was also an autograph session after the game---the players were seated in alphabetical order, in case you wanted to know.

If you wanted to know about the game instead, you can read about it here. I would link to the Star Advertiser article but I'm kind of ticked at them for putting the story on page four of the Sports section and instead putting an article about the men's basketball team's loss and two articles about the baseball team's loss on the front page. The least they could have done was include a picture.

Now, will someone more talented than me please make a .gif of Ashleigh Karaitana's three-pointer? Pretty please with whatever fruit you want on top.

    2. Yeah wouldn't have needed that bank shot by Martin or OT if they had hit more of their 17 or so missed free throws.

      Still, great win Wahine!

  7. Largest crowd of the season easy and the loudest. People booed the refs, cheered DE-FENSE, made noise during Pacific free throws, and game the girls a standing ovation. Hope Laura wasn't too disappointed in us.

  12. If the wahine win the big west tourney I am pretty sure they would be a 16th seed and probably have to play stanford or baylor again and if they play like last night, they are losing by over 50 points.

    2. I like Wimbley. She's feisty. When Kuehu, Wimbley, and Haydel are on the court, you know things are about to get physical. It's awesome to see.

Mita, Ali, Jade, and Tai are all on the try out list for the A-2 team. Wonder if Hartong didnt try out. For sure she'd be on there if she did.

  17. Not sure what the tie breaker is for basketball, but we need to stay tied for 1st, then we'll be the 1st or 2nd seed to get the double bye . #24 for pacific was all smiles in the beginning of the 1st half, but once UH took the lead, she sure changes her mind and realized it wasn't going to be that easy. That why the game is played.
