Basketball: Hawaii at Cal State Northridge

Introductions:  There is a Hawaii girl on the Northridge team. Commentators talking very highly of Laura Beeman. Female commentator calling the Wahine "Waheen." Male commentator calling Marissa Wimbley "Wimberley."

Hawaii 0-7:  Northridge scored all seven points in the first two and a half minutes of the game, prompting Laura Beeman to call an early time out. It is now 0-9 with a little more than 15 minutes left to play in the first half.

Hawaii 6-14:  Commentators commentating that Hawaii not showing much enthusiasm.  Hawaii 9-14.  Live video stream, audio stream, and live stats available at gomatadors.com.  The video only has the court announcer and the audio stream does not match the video stream and I'm not paying much attention. Hawaii has cut down deficit to four, trailing 15-19. Beeman not happy with officiating. Male commentator:  "Laura Beeman having conversation with (referee) and it is not a pleasant one."

Hawaii 21-27:  Kalei Adolpho at the free throw line and misses both.  Male commentator completely butchers "Hoolehua, Molokai." It wasn't even close. Male commentator:  "Kariatiana misses the layup and Martin flies in, gets it back to Adolpho who misses the layup." It does not sound like Adolpho is having a good game, because the commentator just said something else about her being unable to finish.  Male commentator on Laura Beeman:  "First time I've ever seen her, and I love the way she handles the officials. She's very persistent."

Hawaii 26-31:  Female commentator says the game is very physical. Ashleigh Karaitiana goes over the back of someone or something and a foul is called against her. Hawaii 28-31. Female commentator:  "The officials have to keep this game under control with all the physicality." Video stream is no longer working so I can't tell what is happening.

Half:  Hawaii ends the half on a 6-0 run to take their first lead in the game 34-33! Last two points were by Shawna Kuehu. Laura Beeman being interviewed, giving lots of credit to the players; keeps saying "These young ladies have become my family."

Hawaii 37-39:  Male commentator:  "Martin and Alama are getting a little punchy. They were warned by the officials too." Kamilah Martin at the free throw line and makes both. Hawaii 39-39. I'm just reading this book now.

Hawaii 52-45:  You go Hawaii! Female commentator:  "CSUN just can't seem to buy a bucket right now." That is awesome. Karaitiana for three and it is 55-45 with nine minutes left in the game!  Hawaii commits three fouls in a row.  Make that four!

Hawaii 56-49:   The last four points by Northridge were through free throws.  Shawna Kuehu at the free throw line and makes two.  Male commentator says that she missed all but seven games in a row because of "an injury." I've never heard of a pregnancy referred as such. Kuehu for two and Hawaii regains 10-point lead with five minutes left to play.

Hawaii 59-49:  Offensive foul called on Martin after she "knocks down Alama with an elbow." Now Haydel elbows Alama or maybe Alama elbowed Haydel. Haydel at the free throw line. Male commentator:  "Haydel at the free throw line and makes the first one. You can hear her family there."

Final:  Hawaii 65-53! Way to get it done, ladies!

The University of Hawaii women's basketball team will play against Cal State Northridge today at 2:00pm HST. Until then, watch this StoryCorps video about nine-year old Ronald E. McNair trying to borrow books from a whites-only library in 1959. McNair grew up to become a NASA physicist and the second African-American man to fly in space. Tragically, he died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986 (Hawaii-raised Ellison Onizuka died in the same mission). And then after the game, go to your library and read something in his honor.

  5. 1st and 2nd seeds for the Big West tournament get a double bye, so both basketball teams need to be the 2nd outright, not sure about big west tiebreakers, don't want our teams to drop to 3rd or 4th. GO BOWS.

  6. The pregnancy was last year. Kuehu was concussed in the 2nd game of the season (@USF). Since concussion effects vary, linger and/or can recur, Hawaii docs played it safe.

  7. Sorry. Couldn't tell if this -- "Male commentator says that she missed all but seven games in a row because of 'an injury'" -- referred to last or current season.

    4. Wong is slow at putting together a schedule and slow at getting recruits for the wahine volleyball team. Only 1 so far for 2014 when we lose 8 players next year.

    5. We only lose 7 now that Kam is possibly transferring. But we do know now that USC and Nebraska will play Hawaii at USC on 3/22
