Volleyball: Stauber out, another Goodman in

According to the Honolulu Star Advertiser (UH loses 1, but more help is on the way), Monica Stauber has decided to leave the team. Stauber and Mita Uiato were the only setters last season. Uiato will get some help next season, however, with Tayler Higgins of Punahou coming in along with Kaela Goodman's 5-11 setter sister Kyra Goodman.

Others in the 2013 recruiting class are 6-3 hitter Nikki Taylor; and Southern Idaho transfer and 2012 AVCA Junior College Player of the Year, 5-9 hitter Keani Passi. Both have Hawaii ties. Taylor will be graduating from Kaiser High School. Passi is from Waianae and graduated from Pearl City High School.

Coming in 2014 is 6-3 hitter Kalei Greeley. She also has Hawaii ties. Greeley's grandmother grew up in Hawaii and gave her a trip to the Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Camp for her 13th birthday.

Best of luck to Monica and welcome, welcome to the new people.

In other news:  Monica Stauber, Kaela Goodman, Jade Vorster, and Katie Spieler earned 4.0 grade point averages last semester. Woot!

Sad to see Monica go. Thought she had dibs on the starting spot after Mita leaves next year. Oh well.

I think it's great that we're finally seeing some taller people on the roster. At 5-11, Goodman will be the tallest setter we've had in a while. Robyn should be able to do great things with her.

Sadly I guess Monica would be one of the wahine that would go. Sad to see her leave but hope she's happy wherever she ends up. With 2 freshman setters coming in Im guessing one will redshirt depending on who wins out the backup spot or out right spot from Uiato.

There was some conversation here before about whether the vball team does community service. They fed homeless people last night according to Dave Shoji's twitter.

Anonymous said...

disagree with redshirting one of them. i say let them keep competing with each other through their (hopefully) four years here. it'll only make them better.

Anonymous said...

Good luck Monica! You will be missed.

Anonymous said...

One of them will definitely get more playing time than the other. Why waste a season and get a possible unhappy player?

if one of them does redshirt, i hope it's not goodman, just because i want to hear what jim leahey will have to say about goodman setting to goodman. heh.

how tall is the punahou girl? and from what i've read, it's less the height but the athleticism that matters.

sorry to hear about monica leaving but really happy that all of last year's starters are staying. i had a feeling it was her ever since the rumors that someone asked for their release started. i figured it was either her or ginger. anyway, good luck monica.

The article just says "Backup setter Monica Stauber has decided to leave the team after two years."

Is she just leaving the team or is she leaving Hawaii altogether?

I'm sad about Monica, always a Wahine, come back for the alumnae game. Now I get why Justine Wong-Orantes not coming to UH with the Los Al connection. We had a Goodman connection that why.

Thanks!

Sad to see Monica go, and I have a feeling she wasn't gonna be put on scholarship next season .
This just means UH is closer to starting Higgins... Once uiato struggles, Higgins will come and and impress.

Anonymous said...

she's still at the school right? i could have sworn i've seen her around. did she leave because of playing time?

Anonymous said...

Good luck Monica!

Anonymous said...

Yup, still unsure if she is just qutting volleyball and staying at UH or leaving.. Her boyfriend is on the football team...

Anonymous said...

Its weird cause, I not sad Hagins left at all, sorry but I'm not. But I'm really sad, about Monica. Like when Ferrell, not sad either.

Anonymous said...

If she is transferring, surprised she's still at UH. Would have thought she'd be going to her new school now so that she could practice with them in the spring like Michelle Waber and Stephanie Hagins did. Oh well. Considering that she hardly got any playing time last season and given that Mita has been doing awesome (Honorable Mention AA), I guess she has to leave if she wants more playing time.

Anonymous said...

That's cause Hagins and ferrell were not likable.....

Anonymous said...

Well, Stephanie was only here for one season while Monica was here for two, so I'm guessing there's more of a connection. Monica also came with a really dynamic freshman group (Jane, Kalei, Jade, Ginger, etc.) that everyone seemed to connect to from the beginning. I'm sad she's leaving too, mostly because we never got to see what she could REALLY do on the court.

Anonymous said...

she's not leaving cause of Mita doing awesome ( she hasn't)
She is leaving because of the new recruit..the writing was on the wall....

Anonymous said...

I hope Monica all the best whether or not she's transferring or if she just decided she just doesn't want to play volleyball anymore.

Anonymous said...

We saw Monica play lots , she is a good setter and gutsy with her middle sets. But she lacked the athleticism that Uiato has in blocking and also her defense wasn't as strong...which is the only reasons Uiato stated ahead of her.

Anonymous said...

the AA committee disagrees with you about mita but whatever. haters gone hate

Anonymous said...

If jane wasn't suspended that would have been her on the honorable mention list instead....
last years biggest weakness was the setting and Kalei and Jade's blocking.... anyone who knows volleyball can tell that...

Anonymous said...

So weird Goodman was uncommitted this long considering how good she is.

Anonymous said...

from what I can see in videos she is not that good, and I hope she is a walk on.

Anonymous said...

She's named one of the top setters in her class

Anonymous said...

no matter how good the setter, hawaii fans are never going to be satisfied. it's a thankless position.

Anonymous said...

there is no requirement said that hawaii gets to have to AAs. if mita didn't deserve it, they wouldn't have given it to her

Anonymous said...

no she's not, she's not even top 100..from prepvolleyball.. Higgins is top 20, Taylor is top 27,

Not by reason said...

I too am looking forward to the inevitable Leahey-isms that will come with both Goodmans being on the court.

Anonymous said...

Hawaii fans are used to great setters, ah mow, and KK.. so when setters that aren't first team all americans come by they are always judged by those standards.

Anonymous said...

getting honorable mention DOES not make you an all american... it just means she made the region team... otherwise Long beach state can say they had three all americans last season lol and we know that is not the case at all.

Anonymous said...

They call them Honorable Mention All-Americans. Good enough for me.

Anonymous said...

Bad news about Monica leaving. Always bad news when someone who is already a part of the team leaves. Good luck to her though.

Anonymous said...

I never thought they fit in here and I guess they knew.

Anonymous said...

nah. i was satisfied with Mafua and Kamanao.

Anonymous said...

Goodman looks very good in the utube video. She's tall, quick, athletic sets the right and middle well and can block and hit. She and Higgins should be a great combo.

Oh oh spam alert...

Not by reason said...

They are irritating. Spam filter catches most but some go through.

Anonymous said...
