Pre-game show: Acknowledgement that Shawna Kuehu is a mother. About time. Destiny King was reportedly recruited by Long Beach. Her brother Keala King plays basketball for Long Beach. Nani Cockett was also recruited by Long Beach. Vicky Tagalicod reportedly took Laura Beeman aside after one practice and asked how she could get more playing time. Laura Beeman told her to remain healthy and get in better shape.
National anthem and Hawaii Ponoi: The singer is channeling her inner Mariah Carey. She's really into it. Also, her false eyelashes are wonky. Long Beach started to leave the court prior to Hawaii Ponoi. That happens too often. They should give instruction sheets to visiting teams.
Starting lineup: Ashleigh Karaitiana, Kalei Adolpho, Sydney Haydel, Monica DeAngelis, and Kamilah Martin. Linnae Barber is wearing an aloha shirt and so is Mary Wooley. Laura Beeman: snakeskin. Reasons to watch Wahine basketball: Mary Wooley's shoes.
19:12: Jim Leahey: "(Kalei) Adolpho again having trouble with her layups." I thought about bringing a sign that says "Don't Dew it," referring to former University of Hawaii women's basketball player Rebecca Dew who was known for missing easy layups, but my friend said no one would get it. Hawaii 4-2. Long Beach just throwing three point shots; good thing they are missing. Long Beach is tall. Ashleigh Karaitiana for two and "that was sweet indeed," according to Jim Leahey.
13:32: Hawaii 8-8. Nani Cockett says that Long Beach keeps having to go backdoor because Hawaii is putting too much pressure on them but Hawaii is getting no help on the offside. I do not know what any of that means. Hawaii 10-12. Destiny King and her shorts are in. Karaitiana on the floor. Rainbow Wahine basketball drinking game: drink every time Ashleigh Karaitiana is on the floor. Hawaii 17-14.
8:32: Laura Beeman is mad at the referee because Shawna Kuehu "got mugged and when they do call a foul, it is on Karaitiana." Karaitiana falls. Kamilah Martin was the coach for one of the alumnae teams. Cute! Karaitiana on the floor. Hawaii 17-17. Karaitiana is inadvertently tripped by a Long Beach player and that looked like it hurt.
4:28: Hawaii 25-19. Adolpho turns the ball over. And again. Jim Leahey: "Adolpho tough shot and misses everything." Nani Cockett: "She's still trying to find her shot from volleyball, I think." I think that Adolpho is good at two sports but can be great at one, so should pick one. In the words of Ron Swanson, "Never half ass two things. Whole ass one thing."
Half: Hawaii 27-23. Kamilah Martin is mad because Long Beach is playing dirty and fouls are not getting called. The Long Beach coach is mad at the referee. An assistant is trying to calm her down, but she swats him aside. Laura Beeman is mad at her team: "We missed seven layups and (something, something) rebounds. No matter how bad the officials are, that is not what matters right now. We can't be missing seven layups. That's it."
18:56: Karaitiana on the floor again. Long Beach reportedly has committed five fouls in the last four minutes. Monica DeAngelis is wearing an elbow sleeve. Hawaii 33-27. I am finding it hard to pay attention because my joints feel like they are on fire, but I do not have the flu because I refuse! Hawaii 37-31. Foul called on DeAngelis; Martin disagrees and tells the referee that Long Beach traveled.
11:36: Hawaii 43-35. A horn goes off for no reason and everyone freezes. Hah! Destiny King passes the ball to no one. Offensive foul called on Martin and it is so ridiculous that she cracks up. The headband of Long Beach's number 32 comes off. Seriously, ladies, use better headbands. Ask the soccer team for suggestions. Hawaii 48-39. Shawna Kuehu misses an easy layup.
7:08: Awesome pass by DeAngelis to Martin! Long Beach runs out of time on the shot clock so just chucks it up. Long Beach coach has her head in her hands. She reminds me of the Louisiana Tech coach a little bit. Hawaii 50-41. Karaitiana commits her third foul. Long Beach doing the full court press. Ten seconds left on the shot clock and King is still on the Long Beach side of the court. Haydel steals the ball but instead of taking the layup passes it to Martin who couldn't quite catch it. Rebound by Adolpho but "Adolpho couldn't do it but Martin does. The old reliable Martin." Block by Adolpho! Adolpho is swarmed by Long Beach players.
4:46: Adolpho at the free throw line and makes one. Hawaii 52-44. Foul called on Haydel. DeAngelis at the free throw line and makes both. DeAngelis is awesome. Bad pass by King. Hawaii 54-50. DeAngelis travels and her headband is halfway down her forehead. The players are tripping over each other under the basket. Reasons to watch Wahine basketball: Kamilah Martin. She has 24 points so far. All by herself. That's nearly half of the team's total points. Hawaii 56-51. DeAngelis at the free throw line and makes one. And I just lost the rest of this post. Argh. Well, the important thing is that the Wahine won.
Final: Hawaii wins 65-57. Karaitiana and Martin laughing on the sideline. This team is adorable. Martin is Player of the Game for Hawaii. The Long Beach Player of the Game looks a bit like Karaitiana.
Post-game: Kamilah Martin being interviewed. She scored a total 27 points. Vince Goo tells her to make sure to thank her teammates because they did a good job looking for her. Hawaii is second in the conference. Second!

Y'all, I am sick. It feels like the flu, but it can't be the flu, because I refuse to have the flu. I refuse. I think I have the flu.
That said, the University of Hawaii women's basketball team will play against Long Beach State today at 5:00pm HST. Go, don't go, everything hurts too much for me to care. You should go. The team will appreciate it.
I will be watching the game live on OCSports 16. Video streaming will be available on OCSports.TV, audio streaming at www.espn1420am.com, radio coverage at ESPN 1420 AM, and live stats at HawaiiAthletics.com.
Until then, here is an article about Destiny King's shorts (thanks so much to one of you for the tip). The reason why she makes them look the way she does:

Until then, here is an article about Destiny King's shorts (thanks so much to one of you for the tip). The reason why she makes them look the way she does:
"You get a little breeze down there," said King, a rising senior at Long Beach (Calif.) Poly. "We run a lot."
She added, "When you try a crossover move, the ball doesn't get caught in your shorts. I have big legs and my thighs rub together."Hah! Also, ew.
haha! nasty!
ReplyDeleteAnd there was the time at the End of the Trail tournament in Oregon City, Ore., last year when King had her shorts rolled up extra high and tight. She bent over during a game and, well, gave the college coaches maybe more than they were looking for.
ReplyDeleteI guess that's one way to get noticed by scouts.
long beach coach is pissed
ReplyDeleteCome on Wahine! Gotta keep that ball.
ReplyDeleteGreat win for the wahine
ReplyDeleteGood job Wahine! Keep it up! I can already hear people jumping on your bandwagon.
ReplyDeleteI say let them jump! At least more people will be watching. Go 'BOWS! But still have to work on those turnovers and somebody gotta put up three pointers sometime.
ReplyDeletethis. what happened to nish? she hasn't played at least the last three games. is she injured?
Deletesaw mita in the stands. come on vball girls. if the entire softball team can show up to support steph who isn't even in the team anymore, you can do a better job supporting kalei at least for a couple of games
ReplyDeletewuuuurd.
DeleteCongrats Wahine! Great start to the Conference so far! Keep rolling!
ReplyDeleteI guess give credit to Destiny King for being honest but that is waaayyy too much information. Gross.
