Update! HawaiiAthletics.com has highlights of yesterday's game and a post-game interview with Laura Beeman. In this week's fun with stats: The Wahine scored 74 points against Cal State Fullerton and turned the ball over 24 times. Cal State Fullerton scored 36 of their 83 points off those turnovers. Marissa Wimbley scored zero points but lost the ball twice in her three minutes of game time. Destiny King scored four points in fourteen minutes and lost the ball six times. Another player who had more turnovers than points scored: Pua Kailiawa (seven minutes, one turnover, zero points).
Previously
5:12pm: Hawaii doing well, leading Cal State Fullerton 12-4 with 15 minutes left in the first half. There is a Fullerton player named Iwouha. Listen/watch, if only to hear the commentators have to say her name really quickly. Commentator is trying very hard to pronounce the players' names correctly. Pua Kailiwa loses her shoe twice in one play. Awesome.
5:26pm: Hawaii 20-13. Ashleigh Karaitiana with nine points and six rebounds so far partly because Fullerton is focusing solely on Martin, according to commentators. Commentator One: "Fullerton down 25-18, probably due to the shoddy defense." Commentator Two: "If the Titans can limit the offensive rebounds of the Wahine then they should be in good shape."
5:33pm: Hawaii 25-22. Yeah, I don't know. Commentator One: "Considering that the Titans haven't been playing very well, they are fortunate to only be down by three." And the game is now tied 25-25. Fine then. Cal State Fullerton was ranked last (10th) in the Big West Preseason Poll. Hawaii ranked sixth. The commentator just said "tush." Kamilah Martin with only four points so far.
Half: Hawaii 35-33, after Tagalicod made a jumper at the three second mark.
6:00pm: Cal State Fullerton misses an easy layup but then easily steals the ball from Adolpho. Adolpho looks like a jumping bean right now, jumping and missing and jumping and missing. Adolpho is fouled. Commentator One: "Adolpho is 0-3 so far this year, make that 0-4." Adolpho makes the second. Karaitiana at the free-throw line; makes one. Marissa Wimbley in for Monica DeAngelis. Hawaii 41-42.
6:08pm: I keep hearing "Imua" when the commentators say Iwouha. My coworker hears "A hoo ha." Karaitiana is reportedly bleeding. The referee makes sure she is properly bandaged before letting her back in the game. Hawaii turns the ball over twice in a short period of time. Hawaii 43-45. Destiny King is in. Commentator One: "King with the John Stockton shorts. If you know what I am talking about, you know exactly what it looks like." I don't know who John Stockton is, but in case you are wondering what King's shorts look like: here. Hawaii 45-49.
6:17pm: Commentator One: "It looks like Martin now putting her will into this ballgame." She now has 12 points. Interesting: The Cal State Fullerton scoreboard shows the team nicknames instead of school names, so "Titans" and "Wahine." Commentator Two: "I am definitely having a hard time saying the Hawaii players' names." It looks like there are more Fullerton dancers in the arena than there are people watching --- so not that different from Hawaii. Fullerton player fouled, whistle blows, Fullerton player keeps going and gets the point. I did not know it works that way. Tagalicod turns the ball over. Hawaii 54-59.
6:27pm: Martin with a jumper. I've never seen her do that! She's usually right under the basket. Tagalicod turns the ball over again. King chucks the ball nearly the full-length of the court to Martin who scores. Haydel does the same thing to Adolpho who scores and is fouled. Adolpho misses, but short rebound and nearly all of the players are on the floor. Commentator One: "Destiny King doing it Harlem Globetrotter style." Hawaii loses the ball again. Fullerton with another three. Another turnover by Hawaii, their 17th. Seventeen! And now eighteen. Hawaii 66-67 with 3:39 left.
6:38pm: "King just holding on to the ball with 10 seconds left on the shot clock." She gives it to Martin, who turns it over. One of the Fullerton players is about to break the school's three-point shooting record, according to the commentators. "Hawaii with at least 20 turnovers now." Twenty-two actually. Hawaii nearly loses the ball again. Hawaii 69-76. "Hawaii needs to play a little faster now." King just keeps keeping the ball and keeping the ball. King called for a charge. Yeah, Hawaii is going to lose this, you guys. "Hawaii wasting too much time now." Pass the ball, Destiny!
Final: Hawaii loses 74-83. I am not happy, partly because I am hungry and partly because Hawaii had 24 turnovers compared to Fullerton's nine.

I think the Wahine will surprise some in the big west and coach will get some extra money for road wins.
ReplyDeletePreseason schedule definitely has them tested and ready for the Big West
ReplyDeletethey should win this game easy, which means $1000 for the coach.
ReplyDeleteMartins averaging the same points and rebounds with less minutes played, which bodes well for the Wahine. Looking forward to watching the live stream.
ReplyDeleteI want them to make a statement with this game. GO BOWS!
ReplyDeleteIs the live stream working.
