Volleyball: Hawaii vs. UC Irvine

The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team made quick work of UC Irvine last night and won in three, 25-18, 25-11, 25-18. The pace was a bit frenetic (or maybe the static from the speakers did things to my brain) but it seemed to work.

Courtney Lelepali wore her team shoes! I still want to know what happened to her shoes on Tuesday. Mita Uiato set the middles. She also had two kills and two blocks, including one block solo. I'm beginning to think that Mita Uiato is awesome. Emily Hartong had a couple of nasty falls, the second worse than the first. It was so bad that several of the people in front of me cringed. BE CAREFUL, EMILY! Imagine the ensuing drama if she gets injured. OMG.

Members of the men's volleyball team were in attendance; some of them wore UC Irvine shirts, probably in response to the men's teams on the mainland wearing "Hawaiian" shirts during the women's matches there. The shirts didn't really make an impact (difficult to make out), so I suggest something more obvious for the match against Long Beach State --- toupees, for example.  Here's Nick West. His shirt says "Can't Eaters."

Kalei Adolpho had a couple of dunks --- like she literally jumped up and dunked the ball, two handed, straight down to the other side. Awesomeness. She also had three blocks and three digs. Ashley Kastl's hair was really pretty, but she might want to consider waterproof mascara. Ask Jane Croson what brand she wears, Ashley! Kastl had three kills in 13 attempts.

Speaking of Jane Croson, she was --- meaning she laughed at herself, grinned through long rallies, and failed to move her feet on occasion. She had 14 kills and eight errors in 33 attempts and one service ace. My friend says her blocking improved; actually, my friend said "She's been touching more balls," but that sounds weird, so I'm going to say her blocking improved.
me:  "Jane Croson's big head wasn't there today."
my friend:  "Jane Croson's big head wasn't there on Tuesday either."
me:  "Maybe Jane Croson's big head will be there on Saturday."
Long Beach State on Saturday! Here's a short writeup about the rivalry that I cobbled together from newspaper archives. My friend is talking about bringing a sign. I really hope she doesn't bring a sign.

lol @pretzel. cute

think the linked article was talking more about being an emotional leader. kanani basically said that it's only emily who can be that.

Jane can do better than Hartong: PASS and Jane isn't even a great passer. Hartong can do better than Jane: BLOCK. They are pretty even in everything else.

No way Hartong would be able to carry the whole team. If she didn't have Maeda and Jane next to her we wouldn't have won as many matches.

Hartong is beast. That is all.

But there's no way she would be able to be as successful without her teammates and we know that she knows that and Jane knows that too. They are quick to say that their team is great and thank their setter. And Mita is getting better with the middles but don't know what's going on with Vorster. The ball is not finding the floor anymore like it used to. I think the other teams are noticing that and she has bad hitting percentages.

We must be watching a different team if you think Mita is getting better with the middles

I kind of agree with Kanani. Hartong needs to take ownership of this team in order for them to succeed.

I wish I could read the whole article

"Somebody needs to step up. It could come out in a mean way, it could come out in a soft way. It just has to be something you know is going to trigger your team."

Danielson was crystal clear on who that "somebody" needs to be.

"The only person it can be is Emily Hartong." she said quickly.

The problem isn't Mita, it's the middles. They like slow, high sets. Dave wants a quicker offense. They have to adjust.

Anonymous said...

Mita is the problem when she says she's scared to set the middles. The middles were doing just fine the first 2 weeks.

Anonymous said...

everyone does fine in the 1st 2 weeks because the teams dont have much film on the other team. they obviously exposed their weaknesses

Anonymous said...

How hard is it really to get film on the wahine when all home games are on tv, internet, youtube and etc.?

i think they meant that teams still dont know other teams "game plan". when they struggled during the cal match is when teams started to commit to the outsides.

hawaii won set one 25-18. i don't know if it's just me but that set seemed really frantic. probably just me. hartong had a nasty fall but seems okay. nick west wearing a shirt that says "can't haters" or "can't eaters" and letters are important. hawaii up 16-6 in second set.

finally mita uiato out of her stump!

OH.MY.GOSH. KEEP HARTONG ON THE RIGHT AND KASTL ON THE LEFT. i am literally pulling my hair out right now. he doesnt want to injure hartong, yet shoji puts her on the position which takes the most ugliest sets. and if you want kastl to become a force why not keep her in on the left? rage...

Not by reason said...

aw. it's okay. pats on the head for you.

Not by reason said...

score is 20-13 and people are leaving. another nasty spill by hartong. BE CAREFUL! CHRIST ON A CRACKER, HARTONG. Hawaii wins third set 25-18.

I like Long coming in as a serving specialist

I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for this, but oh my God, Jade Vorster shut up. I sit behind the bench and she just would not stop talking/making excuses whenever the coaches are talking to her. There was one time when Dave Shoji was telling her something and she just would not shut up with the excuses so Shoji walks away from her and what does she do, she turns to her teammates and starts making excuses to THEM. Just shut up! I know you think you're smart and all of that but they are your coaches for a reason! Just shut up!

Not by reason said...

aw, pats on the head for you too.

"finally mita uiato out of her stump!"

when did she have a stump?

Anonymous said...

the jade vorster thing- fame going to her head maybe.

Anonymous said...

mita uiato is freaking awesome. that is all.

Anonymous said...

i don't get how our 5-8 setter can have more blocks than our 6-4 middle. vorster was blocking air.

Anonymous said...

is she talking about emily hartong or emily maeda?

"They dig a lot of balls," Weishoff said. "They come at you from the back row. Maybe they need to find a leader out there though. They seem together, but if things don't go as they should who is going to step up? I think Emily is doing a nice job, but I don't know if she can do it by herself."

Anonymous said...

Probably Maeda. She plays the more obvious leader on the court. She's always talking to the other, etc. Sometimes she's the one talking to the players on the sidelines too.

Anonymous said...

No, she was talking about Hartong

Anonymous said...

the jade vorster thing (bring the reply button back blog owner!)- she also rolled her eyes as soon as shoji turned his back. disrespectful. before you call me a creeper, i sit right there and it was only so noticeable.

Anonymous said...

just wanted to say i love your match recaps :)

Anonymous said...

I was thinking the same thing about the Hartong falls. I love that Hartong goes all out every play but man I was scared every time she fell.

Anonymous said...

right? everytime she makes an awkward dig, i can't decide whether to clap or yell, omg stop doing that!

Anonymous said...

for a minute there i was afraid west's shirt said something else. imagine my relief.

Anonymous said...

haha about jane croson's big head and mita uiato's stump.

emily hartong, kalei adolpho, and kaela goodman are really athletic in that they can cover themselves. they don't always get it done but at least then try really hard. the others don't even look like they try.

Anonymous said...

mita's got her groove back aw yeah

Anonymous said...

Maybe Jade should start listening more, and stop bitching so much. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Shoji and Robyn actually know what they're talking about. The world through the eyes of Jade Vorster; "There's my opinion, and there's my opinion. I'm always right and I don't care what you think."

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't go THAT far but I agree that she needs to listen more. I mean, if one of your coaches turns away from you at one point and then another coach actually gave you the hand just to get you to shut up, that's probably a sign that you are talking too much.

Of course, as I am typing this they're replaying the interview where she is bragging about having to tell the others to help her out :/

I don't know how Emily Hartong acts in private and I don't really care but she always acts really good at matches and interviews. Copy her.

Anonymous said...

I don't know Jade personally but I do know Emily enough to say that when you stated that " she always acts really good at matches and interviews", that's exactly how she is all the time that I have spent time with her. She is a really good person, very humble and respectful to everyone. Just look at her expression after she hammers one, all business and not boastful at all. Then there is the goofy, fun side if you saw the video of them lipsyncing. Of course this is what I know of Emily.

I don't get it. Is West implying that they are lesbians or something?
